ABSTRACT

Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH) analogs were introduced as a new approach for the treatment of endometriosis 22 years ago1, yet there has never been a consensus on the exact role of these substances in the management of this disease. The challenge in deciding upon the optimal treatment for a woman with endometriosis is difficult, because it requires not only an understanding of the cause and development of the disease and knowledge about the therapeutic options available, but also an acknowledgment and acceptance of the individual expectations of the woman. Her symptoms, whether they are pain or infertility, have to be taken into account, as does her age, before any treatment regimen is commenced.
