ABSTRACT

Low voltage (less than 1000V) This is the commonest type of electrical injury and occurs mostly in the home. Young children are often involved as their natural inquisitiveness leads them to explore their environment-chewing on electrical flex or inserting their fingers or objects into electrical sockets; as a result, injuries usually involve the hands or mouth. Depending on the characteristics of the current, there may be tetany; the patient may be unable to let go and the strong muscular contractions may cause fractures or dislocations. The cutaneous injury may be similar to thermal burns.
