ABSTRACT
In early 2003 SARS emerged out of East Asia to become the first global disease outbreak of the twenty-first century. This chapter examines the political and security dimensions of the outbreak, with a focus on:
1 how countries in East Asia responded, individually and collectively; and 2 what lessons may be derived from the SARS experience for dealing with
future outbreak events.
