INTRODUCTION

It has been estimated that more than 50% of diabetic patients have significant coronary atherosclerotic lesions. This prevalence is 10-fold higher than that in the general population. A significant proportion of diabetic patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) are candidates for revascularization. Nearly 1.5 million revascularization procedures are performed each year in the United States, and approximately 15-25% of those occur in diabetic patients.1
