ABSTRACT
Surgery is often practiced by the clinicians as an art: a skill that is learned, perfected by innovation and repetition, and finally taught in an apprenticeshiplike process. However, physicians have now come to recognize that surgery can in fact be practiced in a scientific manner. Critical evaluation of indications, techniques, and complications by established methods of investigations has led to an improvement in the quality of surgical care delivery.
