ABSTRACT

Accurate assessment is the starting point to implementation of an appropriate and successful management plan for the individual with spasticity. As well as recording physical changes such as resistance to movement, weakness and contractures, the process of building up a picture of how spasticity impacts on an individual’s daily life – both positively and negatively – is vitally important. Depending on the nature of the individual’s neurological condition, they may also have other symptoms, and although these may not be directly related to spasticity, it is important to understand their impact on the person, as they may influence the assessment process or the selection of treatment options.
