It is scarcely necessary to emphasize the importance of the thumb in hand function. The ability to oppose it to other fingers facilitates many ways to handle and manipulate objects. Duchenne de Boulogne 1 believed this facility led to humans dominating the animal kingdom. The expanses of the cerebral area devoted to its function support this conviction.
