ABSTRACT
From the end of the 19th century, with the aim of producing biomaterials for soft tissue augmentation, fat transfer using autografts or homografts was introduced. To mark evolution and specify important events, we
have classified the history into three distinct periods:
• 1889-1977: the period before lipoaspiration • 1977-1994: the period of liposuction and reinjec-
tion of uncleaned fat • from 1994: the period of lipoaspiration, purifica-
tion and atraumatic reinjection • from 1999: the period of tissue regeneration and fat
tissue derived stem cells.
