ABSTRACT

Time is contrasted with space, but also the word time with the word place. The Greeks contrasted topos with chronos and I do not know whether they employed also another term in addition to topos, as scholars using Latin had besides locus also spatium. Did they use topos in a twofold sense, or do place and space mean the same? And if the former, then does the question ‘where?’ relate to place or space? And is also the analogous expression time not unambiguous? And does the question ‘when?’ relate to time only in one of the meanings attached to this name?
