ABSTRACT
This post-war, post-Wall, post-industrial city’s landscape is dotted with more than 5,000 idle spaces.1 Although some are troubled with this, many see these Freiräume as opportunities, for example a growing population of “creatives” including hundreds of thousands of students and precariously employed artists and bohemians looking not just for ways to get by but beyond that to test their visions.2
