ABSTRACT

Failure of a structure has occurred when it no longer meets its intended design and performance requirements. These may include aesthetic considerations. If a reinforced concrete structure has developed signs of AAR it will usually have failed aesthetically in the sense that its appearance will have deteriorated and its condition may appear alarming, but it may remain perfectly serviceable from strength and/or deformation aspects. A reinforced concrete structure may also become unserviceable as a result of deformation or dimensional change or exposure of the reinforcing steel to corrosion, but retain adequate strength for the time being.
