ABSTRACT
Despite this potential, ADM in many countries is typically characterised by rudimentary methods, serious occupational safety risks, environmental degradation, child labour, exploitative work arrangements, gender inequalities and illegality. Hundreds of thousands of women, men and children are nevertheless drawn into the ADM subsector by acute rural poverty, lack of viable alternatives and the hope of riches.
