ABSTRACT

As mentioned earlier in Chapter 1, biomaterials machined by different techniques have tremendous applications for maintaining and/or improving the health of individuals. Figure 5.1 represents different implants manufactured by Morgan Technical Ceramics (https://www.morgantechnicalceramics.com/) and their applications in the human body. Nonetheless, different metals and alloys (Ti, Ti-6Al-4V, Co alloys), ceramics (Al2O3, ZrO2, hydroxyapatite (HA)), and polymers (UHMWPE and PMMA) are commonly machined by lasers for biological applications. This chapter will discuss the laser machining of some of these biomaterials and also the machining of bones.
