ABSTRACT

The term ‘Rock Engineering Design’ encompasses a wide variety of design aspects relating to the planning and the construction of civil and mining projects on and in rock masses-from dam foundations to underground tunnels and caverns. The term also covers a variety of scales from the length and spacing of rockbolts used to stabilise a rock mass to the overall design of an underground hydroelectric scheme. Some projects, such as a large mine or an underground radioactive waste repository can have a footprint of several square kilometres.
