ABSTRACT

In the assessment of a multi-barrier system of re-

positories for storage of gas or disposal of hazardous

waste the geological and hydrogeological features of

the repository site are crucial as the safe confine-

ment of the stored media has to be guaranteed at

least not only for the operation phase but also for

long term periods depending on type of usage. Due

to their favourable transport and geochemical prop-

erties argillaceous rocks can act whether directly as

host rock or surrounding the repository as an impor-

tant constituent of the geological barrier system.
