ABSTRACT
This conclusion presents some closing thoughts on the concepts that are discussed in the preceding chapters of this book. The book explores the seeming intractability of master narratives, the ease with which they can mute or co-opt discursive resistance, and the significant risks that counter-storying work can entail. It explains Marjorie DeVault extended discussions of these challenges, exploring: the relative hearability of stories of varying status; experiences of linguistic incongruence in women's lives; and the need for the continual re-crafting of counter-stories, given their fluid and contextual nature. The book explores this question by drawing upon contributors insights related to efforts for social transformation in community development, public education, and organizational and policy change. Counter-stories and discursive resistance have been the center-point of this book. The book focuses on how women can disrupt and subvert hegemonic meanings in the service of social justice for women.
