ABSTRACT

A crucial factor influencing the development of any economy is the size and capability of the labour force. Demography therefore has a number of important implications for economic performance. In turn the cyclical nature of economic activity influences demographic behavior, with implications for the size of the population, the domestic market and the potential size of the labour force in future years. Moreover, the capability of the labour force is influenced by the level of educational attainment of the population and any improvements in this sphere tend to improve economic performance.
