ABSTRACT

This chapter begins by introducing the reader to the origins of the electomyographical signal and to the many factors that can affect it. Equipment and procedures used to record electromyograms are discussed, and advice is provided on how to maximise the amplitude of the signal and to minimise noise from external sources. Common methods of processing and normalising electromyograms, used to obtain meaningful information from them, are also evaluated. This second edition appraises the effect of varying processing methods on statistical parameters, and reviews the plethora of normalisation methods that have recently been introduced.
