Creative offender rehabilitation
The extant literature on offender rehabilitation, particularly psychological or correctional rehabilitation, is vast. This chapter does not seek to go over what is empirically well-covered ground. Instead, this is complemented with consideration of an array of creative activities and pursuits that may be useful and enjoyable for ex-/offenders in the process of desistance and change. Offender rehabilitation that is based upon creative talents and craft skills can provide therapeutic benefi ts as well as future employment opportunities. Working with one’s hands to create something of value for someone else is evident across various initiatives in this chapter, including making dresses, quilts and greeting cards. Less tangible in a material sense but equally powerful in effect and value is the making of music. Creative industries and recreational self-expression are increasingly gaining prominence in correctional settings for far more than the common mantra of ‘keeping them busy’.
