ABSTRACT

When the focus of the discussion is the environment and the economy on a global scale,‘sustainability’, by definition, implies the existence of biophysical limits. Given this, the key issues addressed in this chapter are about the alternative paths society may follow in order to achieve economic development that is judged to be sustainable (lasting) and equitable. In this respect sustainability deals with concerns about intergenerational wellbeing, the sharing of resources involving several generations in an equitable manner. The emphasis of Chapter 13 is on the theoretical underpinnings of environmental sustainability in general.
