ABSTRACT

Frames associated with structural walls constitute a wide family of structures called dual systems. They combine the advantages of both types of structural systems: frames and structural walls being able to accommodate various architectural needs. Consequently, dual systems are nowadays perhaps most frequently used structural solution for high-and super-high-rise seismic prone buildings. Resulting from a combination of two types of elements – walls and frames – having very different deformation patterns under lateral loads, specific behavior features of dual systems are highlighted. Analysis, design and detailing approach of dual systems are described. Solutions for their infrastructures and foundations are presented. Two case studies presenting in detail the design and detailing steps are included.
