Women and the Puritan Churches

This chapter will be suffused with attempts at defining different areas of puritan thought. The term 'puritan' will be used in two, I hope easily distinguished, senses: first, as already used, in the generic sense, as the 'left wing' of protestantism, and incorporating the sects; second, with particular reference to the established Congregational church of Massachusetts, and in this sense very definitely excluding sectarian 'heretics'.
