The Vote

The Representation of the People Act of 1918, and the 19th Amendment of 19~0 are rightly enshrined in the United Kingdom and the United States as monumental landmarks in the history of the emancipation of women in modern times. Experience may indeed have shown that the effectiveness of these measures was a great deal less than had been anticipated. 1 The suggestion that women have failed to use their voting power, even if true, should not, however, be allowed to shade into an argument that votes for women were themselves relatively unimportant.
