ABSTRACT
Various drugs which stimulate the central nervous system (CNS) have been known for over 2000 years. A simple classification of these substances is complicated by their combination of central and systemic effects. Thus, though the compounds mainly stimulate CNS activity, many central stimulants have, in addition, direct effects on cardiovascular functions and on the sympathetic nervous system.
