ABSTRACT

As discussed in the chapter on non-steroidal anti-infl ammatory drugs (Chapter

22), infl ammation is the major response of the body to sports injuries. Moderation

of the infl ammatory response may be benefi cial, certainly in terms of improving

the comfort of the injured subject but also in accelerating the restoration of a

competitor to fi tness. In this chapter an alternative therapeutic approach using

steroidal anti-infl ammatory drugs will be considered. Whilst the use and approach

to treatment of these drugs differ from the non-steroidal anti-infl ammatory drugs

(NSAIDs) the underlying issues are essentially the same.
