The clash between warriors and diplomats is an inherent pattern of modern history. The fortuna of great men rests on conquests, rapid decisions, and celeritas in execution. The diplomat’s creed is that of obedience; he seeks to cope, not to conquer. De Callières has rightly observed that there is no such thing as a ‘diplomatic triumph’.
