ABSTRACT
Persecution, discrimination and sometimes enforced baptism was an enduring theme in Christian treatment of the Jews in this period. There were examples in Western Europe of forcible conversion in Clermont (576), Arles and Marseilles (591), Spain (600) and Paris (629). Among major campaigns of forcible conversion in the Byzantine Empire were those in 640, 721, 873 and 930.
