ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to examine the reality of second home development and ownership in a small town in South Africa and provide an analysis on the implications for equitable and sustainable development. The aim is to reveal the economic and socio-spatial impacts induced by second home development on the local level with a particular focus on the property market dynamics in Franschhoek. Next to the economic implications for this town, we will also concentrate on a more controversial issue related to second home development: the relation with gentrification and the displacement of permanent residents. After a contextual introduction we will elaborate more on the methodology of our research on which this chapter is based. The results will be presented next, starting with an outline of our study area and the circumstances of second home ownership, followed by our analysis of the empirical data collected.
