ABSTRACT

For decades I have been struggling with, and writing about, the inner journey of what it means to be a therapist, not only in terms of professional development but also the personal changes that we experience as a consequence of our work. I have been a big fan of the ways that clients become our teachers in a multitude of ways. Of course, they provide valuable feedback on what we do that is most and least helpful; it is just as significant that they influence and affect us on a deep personal level. Our clients remind us about issues we have yet to resolve. They help us to explore some of the most mysterious and confusing life conflicts. They push us to look at aspects of ourselves that are less than pleasing. They teach us about resilience and courage, but also test us with regard to setting limits. Most of all, they help us access greater compassion, caring, and yes, love.
