ABSTRACT

Israel celebrated its 60th anniversary in 2008, 1 which was clouded by the sad remembrance of al-Nakba 2 that has always accompanied the commemorations of the establishment of the Israelis’ homeland. Al-Nakba is an Arab term used to describe the exile of Palestinians that followed the first Israeli-Arab war in 1948. 3 In the last 60 years, the Palestinian national movement has prevented the drama related to the creation of Israel from falling into oblivion. However, Palestinian nationalism is still far from being able to provide a state for the Palestinian nation. In fact, Palestinians have been living for the last six decades under the control of third states: Jordan and Egypt (1948–67) and Israel after the ‘Six Day War’.
