ABSTRACT

The purpose of this chapter is to provide information on mental imagery so that coaches can provide training in this skill for athletes. This chapter will include information on:

• defining mental imagery; • the content of mental imagery; • the 4Ws of mental imagery; • the benefits of mental imagery; • theories of mental imagery; • imagery perspective; • imagery ability; • PETTLEP approach; • different types of imagery content; • helping athletes do mental imagery; • optimising imagery training.
