ABSTRACT

César Chávez is one of the most prominent labor leaders and civil rights activists in United States history. He fought tenaciously for improving the work and living conditions for farm workers in the United States. He cofounded and led the fi rst truly successful Farm Workers Union which resulted in great improvements for farm laborers. He succeeded in spite of the migratory nature of these workers and tremendous opposition from powerful growers, politicians, legal offi cials, and another powerful union. He was a forceful advocate of nonviolence and he came to symbolize the history and collective spirit of farm workers in the United States.
