ABSTRACT

By July 1913, the physical strength of Mrs Pankhurst and Annie Kenney had become sapped by repeated hunger strikes, and in August the two women departed for a much-needed holiday on the continent. While abroad, Mrs Pankhurst decided that in October she would go on a lecture-tour of America. She felt that the tour would give her the relaxation of two sea-voyages, that she would be able to speak in public without fear of re-arrest, and that she could raise funds for the Union. * Annie Kenney, on the other hand, decided to risk re-arrest on her expired licence by returning to England to speak at the Union’s first major autumn meeting.
