ABSTRACT

Responsible investment in the UK has a long history with early roots in ethical investment funds and other forms of dedicated portfolios managed on an ethical basis. In this chapter we trace the development of the UK’s responsible investment landscape. We focus especially on the shift in investment strategy – screening to engagement and integration – which has encouraged the growth of socially responsible investment (SRI). We also emphasize the importance of institutional investor engagement and dialogue, driven by successive codes of corporate governance best practice (the Cadbury Code, the Combined Code and the Stewardship Code in particular).
