ABSTRACT
A baby’s crying. Mother and father wake up. They’re tired but they pick the child up and comfort her or him. Does this prove babies have social intelligence and ‘know’ that crying will make their parents hug them? Or is it just that the human newborn is innately ‘wired’ to cry? It’s just a reflex. Two-year-olds certainly know that if they cry, good parents will give them attention.
