ABSTRACT
INTRODUCTION
Abaza belongs to the Abkhaz-Adyge subgroup of North-West Caucasian. There are at least 30,000 speakers in the Russian republic of Karachay-Cherkessia, and many in Turkey who migrated there after the Shamil uprising in the mid-eighteenth century. The Tapanta dialect affords the basis for the literary standard.
