ABSTRACT

THE banking system of Germany in I914 was very similar to that of other Continental countries, except that It industrial banking " was more fully developed than was usual elsewhere. The central bank of the country was the Reichsbank, which performed all the functions of a State and Reserve Bank. In addition, there was a comparatively small number of very strong credit banks closely bound up in the industry of the country, and a multiplicity of smaller independent bankers, many of them, however, with extensive' foreign connections and large dealings in exchange and general foreign banking.
