ABSTRACT

THE amalgamation movement and the system of branch banking which have been typical of the development of banking in Great Britain and in Canada of late years have had their counterpart in South Africa. These concentrations have been carried so far that commercial banking may be said to be virtually in the hands of two great institutions, both with their head offices in London-the Standard Bank of South Africa, and Barclays (Dominion, Colonial and Overseas). There are still other banks existing, but they are very few in number, and very small in size.
