ABSTRACT

This chapter reviews the research on mobile learning design and suggests a framework for mobile learning application software (app) design, DCALE (Design Goal Setting, Context Analysis, Alignment with Platform, Learner Experience, and Enhancement of Performance), in order to produce effective and efficient guidelines for instructional designers, teachers, and educators who are considering designing and adopting mobile technology in their educational setting. Limited research has been conducted to identify a framework for mobile learning design in the K–20+ context, and there are few design guidelines for developing mobile learning apps (especially for iPhone or iPad). This chapter explores the factors and design requirements that are crucial to the mobile learning environment, offers a framework with guidelines for application, and describes considerations for designing mobile learning apps (specifically iOS-based apps).
