ABSTRACT

The evaluation of apps used in educational contexts must include accessibility evaluation. This is essential to ensure that all learners have an equitable opportunity to benefit from the app, regardless of ability, disability, or context of use. iOS devices are exemplary with respect to out-of-the-box accessibility, including a wide array of built-in features that allow learners to customize the way that they interact with their devices and apps. In addition, there are iOS app-specific, mobile app-specific, and general learning technology accessibility guidelines that developers can refer to when developing an app to ensure maximal accessibility. However, our survey of several popular educational apps reveals that accessibility is not always proactively incorporated into the app development process or considered by educators when recommending apps for educational use. It is crucial to not only place a priority on accessibility during the app development process, but also on classroom implementation and evaluation of educational apps. An approach that includes multiple stakeholders, from app developers, to learners, teachers, researchers, and parents is required in order to work towards a truly accessible mobile learning experience.
