ABSTRACT
Can we afford to cut carbon emissions to sustainable levels? Fear of the economic cost of climate action remains a key obstacle to progress. Western economies have become dependent on lavish supplies of relatively cheap fossil energy to heat our inefficient buildings, transport goods around the globe, sustain our intensively farmed food chain and support the throwaway culture on which our model of consumption-based growth depends.
