ABSTRACT

Two drawing techniques are developed by the authors in their psychology practices from exposure to art therapy techniques. The fi rst author developed the use of symbolic substitutions or metaphors for clients’ family members. The second author has clients draw abstract representations of self and others using primarily color and shapes, although symbolic objects can be incorporated as well. Art therapists have been using various techniques involving symbolic and abstract art in treatment and evaluation for over 40 years (Kwiatkowska, 1967).
