ABSTRACT

The authors draw upon years of experience in the design of online learning environments to argue that a new age of learning by experience can be enabled by the availability of low-cost, photorealistic, immersive digital simulations. They trace the development of the art and show how early deficiencies can now be countered. Two example case studies provide a detailed insight into the power of this style of experiential learning to transform the way we think about higher education provision on both sides of the Atlantic; the results make for compelling reading. The chapter closes with a review of a range of exciting developments that are just around the corner and which have the ability to take this initiative to yet another level.
