In this section we have looked at a range of teaching devices that all centre on roleplay. Roleplay can be the most exciting and dynamic of activities, but it also has its pitfalls. Learners enjoy the spontaneity and excitement of roleplay but some can also be unnerved by what is expected of them. That said, roleplay has come a long way since people viewed it as ‘a bit of fun’ and a little bit ‘childish’. It can now be viewed as quite a sophisticated and nuanced teaching activity, full of possibilities and potential. It has its passionate adherents, but also, unfortunately, its detractors. What we can say for certain is that it is a teaching activity that should not be ignored. It brings energy to a classroom – and also a little bit of controversy.
