ABSTRACT

The introduction presents an overview of key concepts covered in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book, which some have referred to as a milestone in the history of sport at least in the United States had been made possible through the editorial efforts of John Loy and others. The many books and articles dealing with health and physical education that followed sometimes contained brief historical accounts or comments. In 1929 the American Physical Education Review was divided into two journals: a more research-oriented Research Quarterly and a professionally-oriented Journal of Health and Physical Education. Following World War II American books dealing with the history of physical education would broaden in scope and give more attention to various aspects of sport. It closed with a chapter entitled Physical Education and Nationalism that provided brief overviews of events that had occurred following the Russian Revolution and the rise of Fascism in Italy and national socialism in Germany.
