The Long Good-Bye

The Christo Rei is large, wooden, and bows up at both bow and stern. It stops at every single opportunity along the banks of the rain forest. The dozens of local passengers appear to be stockpiling for the Armageddon; industrial amounts of cargo accompany disembarkation. At each port of call the crew below unloads chattel: beer, grains, sacks of manure(?), long boards. These men work with the efficiency of ants, wearing only shorts and sandals. They are fantastically fit.
