This experience blows my bloated self-image as a savvy traveler. It also reinforces two lessons I already know but apparently forgot. First, never act out of guilt. Second, things that seem too good to be true (things like a wad of dollars falling in front of you on a sordid sidewalk in impoverished Peru) are in fact too good to be true. These lessons are difficult to face because they boil down to confirm that there is no such thing as heaven.
