ABSTRACT

Prior to the creation of the Society, Stanislavsky made frequent appearances on his own, domestic, stage as well as on amateur stages in Moscow. Hitherto, his role had been as performer rather than director, and included appearances in opera with the Musical-Dramatic Circle who performed in the building where Anna Brenko’s short-lived Pushkin Theatre had its base and where the Society of Art and Literature was soon to establish itself. He also acted at the Ermitazh (Hermitage) Theatre, which was to become the Art Theatre’s first home (Moskovskiy Khudozhestvennyy teatr 1914:10).
