ABSTRACT

Why do counselors seem so anxious about leading a group? Why are they apparently so resistant to trying a group approach? Here are some common reservations that we have heard from both students and practitioners:

MARY (second-year graduate student): Group just makes me nervous. I am beginning to hit my stride with individual counseling and I have even begun to enjoy the different pace of marriage and family counseling. Group is too fast. There is so much going on that I am afraid that I am always missing something important.
