ABSTRACT

This chapter will examine the role of interventions for sexual offenders in custody and how this links to their eventual release. It will consider current issues with continuity of treatment and risk management from prison to the community, explore current revisions of treatment that are taking place in order to address some of the inconsistency between custodial and community treatment approaches as well as current gaps in provision. It will explore whether a prison-based programmes approach prepares such offenders for life in the community and what else could be done to improve this transition. It will discuss the risks of developing custodial-based programmes without consideration of a move-on plan for offenders that relates to their actual needs/risks and how these should be managed.
